Why are people such impatient creatures?

I was queuing for the ticket office at Orchard MRT when there was this lady, dressed very aunty-ish, queuing behind me. The ones queuing in front of me basically just want to top up their farecards (they obviously don't know how to use the top up machine; granted, since they're pretty elderly), so the line moved fast...until it was my turn.

I was queuing for the ticket office for a different purpose.

I was there to activate the Ez-link function in my card which I was told I can only do that at a ticket office. No short cuts at the General Ticketing Machines (GTMs) or whatever. I swear for the 5 minutes (or less) the ticket officer was attending to me, this aunty-ish lady was stomping her feet, making 'tsk' sounds and repeatedly saying 'take so long' behind my back.

I turned and GLARED at her, wanted to tell her... "OOI, AUNTIE, don't have time to wait, then don't queue la. queue=wait. It's MY turn, i am entitled to take as long as i want, to get all my things done."

It's not as if i'm holding the line cos i purposely want to hold the line, taking my time to take out my cards slow motion style, taking time to think about what i want done at the ticket office. Good for her that I wasn't feeling ah lian enough to give her a thrashing. So annoying.

I told mich that annoying people are only loved by their parents, if they are lucky. Otherwise, they are not loved by anyone.

Annoying person I shall not become.

Patience I must have.

'Tsk' sounds I shall not make anymore.

and if you find queuing a waste of time, then DON'T queue. or do something while queuing, like try putting your fist in your mouth.

Chinglish... the new ....english?

Mr Goh sent me this link this morning

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6052800.stm

It was a funny read. And as I checked out 'Chinglish' from wikipedia, this is what it is defined as:

"Chinglish, a portmanteau of the words Chinese and English, is an English pseudo-dialect heavily affected by Chinese grammar and accent.

The term "Chinglish", though generally implying poor translation, can also refer specifically to an English-Chinese creole language. This is particularly true in areas that have both English and Chinese as official languages, such as Singapore and Hong Kong. (When specifically discussing the English dialect of Singapore, Singlish may be more appropriate.)"

I find it amusing that China was not mentioned, since if Singapore's english is Singlish... then surely one will know where Chinglish originate from? HongKong's english... would typically be Honklish? I don't know man.

I still find Singapore's english acceptable. Other than the occasionally La, Lor, Leh (which are generally just verbal exclaimation marks), and a rojak of malay, indian and chinese, chinese dialects... our grammar is still considered proper liao lor. Oh, i forgot... There's also a IS craze now. I is everything, you is everything and so on. That's sala (Malay word for wrong) grammar.

I've been tutoring my tuition kids for 4 years now and it's particularly annoying when they don't get their grammar correct. Nevermind that their vocab is not strong, there are still simpler words to use for description. But grammar is really the foundation of proper english... loaded with all the nouns, pronouns, tenses, preposition, etc. So imagine how annoyed i feel when i proof read my colleague's reports.... I feel like a tutor all the time.

Oh well, everybody learns something new everyday, and that does not make those who make mistakes stupid. Most important lesson is to LEARN and don't make the same mistakes again.

We'll see if the ang mohs will find it any easier if one day, they, too, will have to learn to speak Mandarin.

See flikr site for pictorial evidence of Chinglish. These are just for laughs.

新(金豬)年快樂!!

Have to fill up tummy before going for the ever challenging Chinatown walk, especially on the evening when they're starting the lighting ceremony!! with fireworks and fire crackers!!

One of the Gateways to Chinatown (we walked from One George Street)

The shot which missed the fireworks (there were two time slots for fireworks, and we missed both)

This year, they made the buildings into huge projector screens, which I thought was a pretty nice idea... There were similar projections last year, but on a smaller scale.

The crowd

and the amazing ways they use to catch a glimpse of what's happening on the main stage....Porky pig and his warner bro pals were singing CHINESE new year songs in ENGLISH!!! (see video below) I is FAINT on the spot! Mr goh said he already saw this coming....

As i'm not very tall myself, I asked if mr goh would carry me like that.

Cos i certainly don't want to resort to this.....So dangerous man! It was drizzling that night some more!

The battle of the Bakkwas...yea yea... eat all the pork you want....

Mr goh says this Cai Shen Ye looks like Santa Claus...Everything also East meets West liao hor?

but this is new! Teochew puppet show! We could see the lady (in leopard prints) behind the screen. Mr goh thinks it sounds like neighbours scolding each other.... =_=

The La4 Wei4, which I have never tried before...

See the pig's legs and the man chopping up, or rather sawing, the leg....

This is new... Ali... Ali BABA... Ali BABA shi ge kuai le de qing nian...
Huga Shaga Huga Shaga Huga Huga Huga Shaga!!

This is new too... (I initially wanted to eat Tut tut kueh... but the stall i patronised last yr not there any more!!) This is supposedly some Thailand snack. Don't ask me what is the white stuff... The orange stuff is coconut...

and the hand... is this greedy boy's.

Finally at a not-so-crowded street.

After which, we found out that Singapore also got Temple Street!! But why is it not called Miao Jie????

There's also a street of the dead.... right where they sell the new year goodies.... spoooky...

The next day... after a hard punching and kicking bodycombat class, we decided to eat Junk food. hurrr. Mac's new Prosperity Burger!! SUUUUUPER BLACK PEPPER burger. It was soooo spicy!!! I finished my diet coke.

and Mr goh got himself a new haircut for the piggy year. Don't know what's with the pose though...

same pose, 2 different days.. hurhur.

And that's it for the preview of CNY! 新(金豬)年快樂!! ACHAR!!!!

Which year are you born in?

Boss asked what Lunar year this coming CNY is....

and I told him it's the year of the PIG.

I also told him I'm a pig, only to correct myself and say that I'm BORN in the year of the pig.

so he went round asking the rest which year they were born in. Boss said he IS a dog (and he specifically emphasize the IS). m is a rabbit, a says he's a tiger (when I told my bro... bro says he's a sleeping tiger)....

and here's the highlight: e says she's a cock.

well, she meant rooster.

i lauuuugh until....

I want to learn how to play Mahjong!

Somebody teach me how to play mahjong before CNY?

Need to kill time, since everyone will be out visiting ... but I'll be done visiting on the first day on CNY.

Alternatively... I can just camp at Fitness First (wonder if it's open during CNY in the first place?).

or spring clean my place thoroughly.

or finish all the New Year goodies on the first day, and buy more the next and the next.

or SLEEP.

or watch DVDs.

hmm... i've actually got quite a lot of things to do... maybe I won't have to learn mahjong afterall.

-Happy birthday juncheng!-

yet another week.....

Good things that happened this week:
1) successfully ambushed mr goh with 4 sinfulicious cakes to add weight to his tummy:

clockwise from top left: Caramel Almond, Mont Blanc, Guanaja (highly recommended!) and Orange Exotic.
All these from the lovely cake shop at Takashimaya's Rive Gauche.

2) met up for soba dinner with mich, mich's uncle ray and ru. :) and yun came meet me for lunch :D

3)saw a rainbow!!

picture was taken with my camera phone la... so quality not very good... but still can see right?!?! damn happy to see the rainbow... i haven't seen one in... years??

and I also irritated mich by flooding her msn with "It's RAINING, it's RAINING..." "RAIN is here.." "It's going to RAIN"... all cos RAIN is comin to singapore this weekend. I'm starting to find him sexy. HEE.

4)Met up with the hall peeps for dinner at Giraffe and games at mind cafe.
Baby Back Ribs
We played games til 3am ok! Even met a police road block when mr goh sent me back...

I was expecting the policeman to ask us to get out of the car, search our body, search the car and use the alcohol tester on us. BUT... he merely asked where we're going... *disappointed* but he very polite leh! greeted GOOD MORNING wor! the police force also part of the GEMS movement?

5) watched Pan's Labyrinth... i quite like the show.. but mr goh thought it's a waste of time and money. he thinks ofelia is just schizoprehnic, although i tried to convice him that the show is actually trying to weave fantasy and reality together, beautifully. Some scenes are pretty gruesome though. I felt that more could be explored, cos some of the fantasy scenes really don't have much of a purpose. well, if anything, you can pick up a few spanish words after watching the movie.

6) Had Cafe Cartel for dinner!!

I haven't had cafe cartel in... years too. I'm surprised mr goh actually agreed to dine there. Anyways, they've changed the menu at cartel, and you don't have to pay at the counter when u order your food. The bill comes later. There's still FREE FLOW of bread though. I love that about cartel.
I had some mushroom crepe (new on the menu), while mr goh went for the all time favourite pan fried linguine.

I was already FULL after eating half the crepe! and i hate it when mr goh doesn't tell me my hair is messy!!!

and as usual, we finished up with all time favourite banana split.

Not so good things this week:
1) work (no need to say more)

2) had an ucler at the side of my tongue. SO DAMN PAIN. and when this one healed, another developed at the most inner side of my gums. bugger.

3) had to cancel our dinner at amici due to unforeseen circumstances.

Hope the new week will be a better one!

It's Friday... I'm in Love!

The Cure - Friday I'm In Love

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday i'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday Wednesday break my heart
thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday never hesitate...

I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday Wednesday heart attack
Thursday never looking back
It's Friday I'm in love

Monday you can hold your head
Tuesday Wednesday stay in bed
Or Thursday watch the walls instead
It's Friday i'm in love

Saturday wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday never hesitate...

Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throwing out your frown
And just smiling at the sound
And as sleek as a shriek
Spinning round and round

Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff

It's Friday
I'm in love

I remember some very long time ago... I'd like to hum this song every friday. forget the tacky rhyme, the tune is really upbeat (can dl mp3 from this website: http://paradise-engineering.com/quotation/fridayiminlove.html)!

Keeps my spirits up on a FRIDAY!

there's so many things you can be in love with on a friday (though most of it has to do with the weekends ahead):
1) last working day of the week! Don't have to see colleagues for the next two days!
2) waking up only when the 'tai yang sai pi gu' - sun shines on your booty on sat/sun
3) good breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert
4) smell of sunshine (or rain) and greens and coffee/milk tea/milo
5) taking a slower pace as you walk
6) dressing up!
7) spending time with loved ones, including yourself
8) couch-potato-ing
9) taking care of your body - cut nails, trim brows, clean ears, do masks...
10) quality dreaming

so, what are you in love with on fridays?

We are 4

you said... you've been thinking these few days, how life would be without me around

i said... I've been thinking the same thoughts too

you said... you know you're more likely to take things for granted

i said... i sometimes make the same mistakes too

you said... it's gonna be a gamble

i said... i know it's all for the better

we've reached another milestone; does this mean we'll have to look further and beyond?

Sometimes, the unknown doesn't scare you. what you know, or you think you know, does.

I'm just glad we're still pretty much who we are when we started.

and i'm thankful for having you in my life. = )

Virtually the world

I came across this site while searching for stuff for my new project

Virtually the world
http://www.virtually-theworld.com/vtw_home.asp

It's an online experience of virtual cities, as they put it. allows you to have a virtual view of the cities featured.

Naturally, i clicked on Singapore but hor... i don't recognise the place which is featured leh! Does not look Singapore at all!

I hope they'll include more featured places for the different cities... If only i have wings, i'd fly to each one of them. every one of them.

Fireworks in KL

How can I do without fireworks this year?

[the first few seconds of the clip, i was taking in portrait frame.. so the buildings are horizontal. haha, this is not the first time i'm doing this. i'm silly.]

It's my, our, first time spending new year's eve in a foreign land. Though everything is foreign, some things remain familiar, and close to heart. We spent last year's xmas eve on foreign sea (we were out in a kelong) and lit our own fireworks.

It's good that we didn't head out to KL Zouk as intended, cos the streets alone was packed, the train station was packed, and mr goh was a bit under the weather... and we decided it would be a better idea to just have dinner buffet at the hotel, skip all the hustle and bustle outside... and just head up to the revolving restuarant to view the fireworks at midnight.

Will we view fireworks together again next year?

the day after tomorrow

who knows what will happen tomorrow? or in a year's time, maybe 1.5 or more, for that matter...

anyway, sunday night was spent home watching "Day after tomorrow", and what an appropriate time to be showing this on tv... with the incessant rain, earthquakes, tsunamis happening...

"Try not to make Mother Nature angry."

why must we make life-changing decisions...

Thursday, January 11, 2007

Ah-CHOOOOOO!

rain, no rain, rain, no rain, rain.

weather is so bad! I'm getting a cold already!

-under the weather-

=_=

Christmas dinner at The Tavern

-Long overdued post, which was kept as draft all along, until I've finally time to upload the pics... which turned out to be too dark!! And I was a bit paisay to turn on the flash too, cos Boss' wife said me taking photographs is very Japanese!-

The Christmas season is always a nice time in the office. I get to be one of the first to see the Christmas decors along Orchard Road, get to be one of the first to do my xmas shopping, listen to xmas carols.

This is my second xmas with the company. Still remember last year’s xmas gathering on board the sailboat ‘Four Friends’, when the Hong Kong team came to Singapore to celebrate xmas together with us. We were secretly hoping that this year, the Singapore team would go to Hongkong for xmas….but no… this xmas… we are SWAMPED. Or at least, I am swamped.

The Champagne in India project’s report is due on xmas eve. Yes, xmas eve…. As if anyone’s going to read the report on xmas day and boxing day. Clients are strange in that way…

Anyways, I did went to hong kong and met up with Steph, my HK colleague. (more about our gathering later)

Xmas dinner with the company is always a great time to see the other side of our bosses. Boss said one of his friends commented that he looked like the new James Bond, to which all of us BURST out laughing instantaneously….. so much for trying to show him face. He also tried to do magic tricks in front of us. hurhur. and of course, there's the Xmas pop quiz. My favourite qn is 'which of the following has not happened to the company before?'

Option A: A colleague had been robbed, stripped naked and left helpless on the streets while on a business trip in Manila.

Option B: Someone was found out to be having sex in the office....

Option C: The company has been approached by a R(a) film maker to do market research in that area

Option D: The company has been asked to help finance F-16 fighter planes...

Hahahahahaa.... all sounds incredible right?? Only ONE is not true!

Back to the menu....we just ordered whatever we want, without looking at the price. Since this will be equivalent to our DnD or chinese new year dinner, since boss is English and doesn't celebrate CNY. Hee. And since we were working on the Champagne project… it’s only right that we pop some bubbly. ;) and had some red wine too.

Though after the project, i still can't really appreciate wine very well... i just know.. yes, i like the wine... or no, this is not my like. need more practice! i want to be a wine connoisseur!

I also had the BEST beef tartar ever. (well, it's my first too)

It's actually minced raw beef mixed with some sauce. The way to eat it is to spread it on toasted bread, as if it's some dip. Yummy.

Appetiser was Juicy Mushrooms (there was a french name for it, but i've forgotten what it is... )

[The picture of it looks really disgusting!!! but it really is very good!!! dim lightings for a romantic setting, but bad for photograpgs!! argh.]

Boss had escargoes and colleagues had baked scallops thingy.

The decor at The Tavern is really nice too. Full of the xmas feel. I like....

and then... we had Wagyu beef! the server even took out the beef, sliced it in front of us, and weighed it! It's crazily expensive.... $40 per 100g!

my slab was 240g already!

to finish things off, we had dessert. Cherry Brandy... cherry cooked in brandy with Vanilla icecream................

sinful xmas or what.

Back to being the TV addict

wah... i realised i haven't been catching all the channel 5 10pm shows for months. It feels good to sit in front of the TV, couch potato-ing. I must resume my watch-channel-5-10pm-show regime.

in any case, today's my first time watching Girls Out loud, and i think it's really quite entertaining! Good for a time when you don't want to use too much of your brains, just want to watch, think less and laugh more. bro says the programme is trying to be like A simple life.

They tried to get Singaporeans to pronouce the following words:
Explain the film genre
Deodorant
and something else i cannot remember...

so, typical singaporeans we are... will likely pronounce film as 'fi-lim' and genre....?? 'Gen- Ri'!!! me and bro couldn't stop laughing...

and explore singaporean's kiasu-ism... People will just Q when they see everybody else Q-ing.. for free gifts. I LOVE FREE GIFTS! i might just Q too, if it's not too long and I've got time to spare... which one lady so accurately pointed out in the program that it's okay for housewives to Q, cos they have all the time in the world. hurhur. I am so amused.

I think i'm on a natural high too. I went to the gym after work (left the office soon after the clock strucks 6pm!). Feels a bit strange to be heading to the gym, doesn't feel routine...but i hope it will feel routine very soon!! I'm hoping my muscles won't ache so bad i'd have to limp to work again. The oxygen is really getting into my head.

I need to get new sports attire!

Clean-the-House-Sunday

my mother couldn't stop ranting this morning.... rant about the same stuff she ranted about yesterday....

1) that i NEVER EVER stay home to help with the household chores
2) that i should return zee n caro the winter stuff they lent me before CNY
3) that i NEVER EVER bother to clear the rubbish, or clean the basin, or wipe the colgate off the basin, or pick up my hair on the floor
4) that i should tell my brother this this this and that

first, it's NOT TRUE that i NEVER EVER do (1) and (3). It's only times when she sees that things are not the way she wants/likes it that she starts to rant. how about the times when I actually do it and she's not complaining?

and EVERYBODY loses hair EVERYDAY one lor! can't help it if i didn't pick up ONE STRAND of my own hair on the floor right.... and she expects me to pick up my brother's hair too?? I long hair that time, say I long hair, very easy drop hair. now hair shorter, still the same story. I think i go bald better la.

as for (2) she already told me about it yesterday, to which i replied, yes, I will return to them WHEN I GET THE CHANCE TO MEET THEM. in a span of less than 24 hours, she repeats the same thing again. How to not be pekcek!!

(4) i hate hate hate hate hate to relay messages. tell him yourself.

i think if my mum relax a little, slow down a little, lower her volume a little, breathe more, laugh more and chill out more...the house would be a better place?

in any case, i actually wanted to go to FF for a session of BodyJam, but decided i should not anger the empress dowager further and should do all that she said.

So.... I swept, mopped, cleaned, packed, unpacked, and threw away stuff. Still a form of good workout i guess.

plus, there were good movies showing today, so it's not a bad idea to stay home afterall.

I've watched Catch me if you can for like the n-th time, but i'm still enjoying it! eating my chicken chop set meal, chocolates and ice cream and now watching An4 Zhan4 with bro.

I don't think my bro doesn't purposely tries to be at odds with my mum... but there's really a threshold... to how much we can tahan.

breathe more... breathe more...

First Saturday of 2007

I really don't understand....why does my mum like to wash clothes at night?!?!?

I'm like how sleepy right now la... but still have to wait for the freaking washing machine to stop spinning... and then still have to hang out the clothes....

AND IF it rains tonight... still have to bring in the clothes.....

WHY DON'T JUST WAIT TIL TOMORROW, WHEN THE WEATHER IS FINE, THEN WASH CLOTHES?????

This is no good for my panda eyes.

and today, after 15 min in the sauna (75 degree Celcius), i walked out of it feeling faint. and nauseous. and almost passed out in the bathroom. I will never ever sit on the upper seats again. It's too HOT. had to sit on the upper deck today, cos there was this other lady occupying the lower deck.

thank god i didn't faint in the showers. It would be so 'tak glam' ...to carry out a fainted naked, and may i add, flabby woman from the gym.

Mr goh had to rush down to office today, cos there's a bug in the system. he's machiam like the police, or fire fighters, or fbi... or i can't think of any... always on call ... it spoils all plans for a good time out on saturday.

but i'm glad he still made it for Death Note 2.
I felt Death Note one was realllllly good. Death Note 2 so-so. more battle of wits between Light-to and L-ru in the first movie. gets a bit dull in the second one.

anyways, we went to Xing Wang Cafe at Marina for dinner.

cos mr goh wanted to have some Hong Kong food... and we were actually planning to view the HK pictures with wenxiu and jizhi this evening... but mr goh cancelled it, cos he's still going back to the office after dinner. HE IS STILL IN THE OFFICE AT THIS MOMENT. and of course, he is once again disappointed by the so-called HONG KONG STYLE food served in Singapore...smaller servings here... (wait til i upload pics of the HK food we had)

mr goh looking good with his new low-waist jeans and my red bag.

I've changed the colour of my bands (braces) to red too... To usher in the new year! ANG ANG ANG! RED= GOOD LUCK, PROSPERITY, MORE ANG BAOS! I can't wait to have my braces removed.....

Good!! the machine stopped spinning le!!

to continue on my first saturday of 2007, i went to NTUC with my mum this morning and lunched together. that's when i told her about the 2009, 2010 plan. my heart warms up whenever i speak of this plan. :)

got home and the yakult lady came by, saw my bro top naked, and said, Wah, Ni Heng FIT hor.

i couldn't help but burst out laughing.

Time for (the long overdued) sleep!!
